Following tonight’s performance of Götterdämmerung at Leeds Town Hall, TSOTArts is looking forward to attending a special performance from The Chorus of Opera North at the Howard Assembly Room later this month.

On June 25th, The Chorus of Opera North will embark on an evening of folk-inspired 19th century classics in Twilight: Freedom! Sung in five different languages, the evening is a clash of worlds from 19th century political oppression to the romantic vagabond life, performed by the 30 strong ensemble and featuring celebrated and nationally recognised Cimbalom player, Christopher Bradley.

The Chorus, which has been running for 36 years, is a fundamental part of Opera North and has achieved a national reputation through independent performances and Opera North productions.

In a few weeks time, TSOTArts will be chatting to Chorus Master Martin Wettges, making his conducting debut for Opera North. Martin will conduct a blend of traditional Hungarian folk pieces including works by Zoltán Kodály, and gypsy inspired classics such as Bizet’s Carmen and Verdi’s Gypsy Chorus. Born in Germany, he joined the Company in 2013 bringing with him a wealth of experience from Munich Prinzregententheater, where he had been Chorus Director since 2006.

Leading up to his debut, Wettes says ‘the Opera North Chorus is right at the heart of the Company. Dedicated and versatile, the singers have their own soloist careers and bring a range of different expertise to the ensemble.”
