GORIES

The Gories’ appearance at The Magnet on 13th July is one of the more interesting listings on Liverpool’s live music calendar the summer. But it is one that will stick out for any garage rock fan aware of their august reputation, a reputation that continues to grow over thirty years on from the band’s formation.

Arising in 1980’s Michigan, the home of punk forerunners MC5 and The Stooges, The Gories took the anarchic aggression of the previous decades and tinctured it with a playfulness to create their joyous brand of garage rock. The band also introduced strong blues elements into their sound, paving the way for bands like The White Stripes to come to the fore. The White Stripes frontman, Jack White, showed his admiration for The Gories by releasing new material from the band on his Third Man Records label in 2015, garnering them some recent, much deserved attention.

Jack White calls them “the best garage band in America since the 60s.” It will be interesting to see how The Gories live up to this reputation when they come on stage at The Magnet.

Harvest Sun Promotions present The Gories in Liverpool is on July 13th. Tickets available here.
