13 unmissable music events in Leeds this month

By April 27, 2018

Music. Leeds.

Long-standing Leeds-based promoter, DJ and record label manager Tony Green on what not to miss in the city next month.

When the relatively small city of Leeds can support all this crazy live music you know you are in a special place. We need to be thankful as customers for having good ears programming the venues and the venues need to be thankful they operate around a discerning audience. Leeds has always been a feeder for London, make your name here and off you pop.  So, my hat is off for those sticking around and giving us an amazing nightlife without being drawn in by the bright lights and tiny flats of the big city.

Boombox Circus – Festival Vibes (28 April)

Me first! This is where I’m at with Marko Crossley. Boombox Circus is a complete mish mash of greatness. 7 Inch Disco sound is set for the big stage once again at Beaver Works, Leeds on 28 April.

Akua Naru (1 May)

The insanely good hiphop artist, hailing from the US north-east coast but currently residing in Germany, stops over at the Wardrobe in Leeds. We supported her HiFi show a few years back. HIP HOP!

Afro Coalition 7th Birthday Bash (4 May)

Friends who throw good parties, solid house vibes all night long from Malcolm and the crew!

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 (6 May – DATE CHANGE)

Belgrave Music Hall, Leeds on 06/05/18

Went to see Seun at The Church last year and it was a joy. Incredible African music (and obviously authentic – his name tells you that). Worth going for his funny anecdotes in between songs alone.

Afriquoi (13 May)

Belgrave Music Hall, Leeds on 13/05/18

YES – ITS A PARTY! Stuck it on Spotify today as it looked like an interesting show. It’s good – listen for yourselves.

Subdub 20th Bday Pt 2 / Outlook Festival Launch Party / Deep Medi / Exit Records (5 May)

Ear plugs at the ready!  A mighty hot ticket for an incredible long-standing club night at Beaver Works, Leeds.

Chali 2na & Krafty Kuts (16 May)

Love them both, pure energy. What’s not to love about Jurassic 5 meets UK breakbeat. At Brudenell Social Club, Leeds

Ty (21 May)

Promoted Ty’s first Leeds gig back in 98.  He is an ever growing, very special performer in the hip hop circuit.  Don’t miss him at Hyde Park Book Club, Leeds on 21 May.

A Certain Ratio (25 May)

Saw them at Alfresco Festival a few years ago in Blackpool. Excellent – one to tick off the list. Signed to Factory in the late 70s, they have put out 10 LPs out in 30 years. After a quick Wiki search it seems keyboardist Andy Connell, left to form Swing Out Sister in 1985. Catch them at Belgrave Music Hall in Leeds on 25 May.

Asian Dub Foundation (27 May)

Curious to see this one,  saw them live when I was 18 and it was jaw dropping political culture bending insanity with heavy drums. I was blown away completely. An important British band that should always play to a full house.

Moon Unit Lunch Party with Alexander Nut (4 May)

We’re taking over one of the rooms at Hyde Park Book Club as Released, launching our new artist, Meraaki. Jorgie is DJin and I’m bringing lots of lost records. Plus Alexander Nut is ace – this event is not to be missed.

Femi Kuti & Positive Force (28 May)

Belgrave Music Hall, Leeds. No description needed.

20th Anniversary of Fresh Jive 20th Anniversary (23 June)

I would love to see anyone there who visited Fresh Jive in its Faversham, Cockpit, Hi Fi, Elbow Room, Warehouse days.

Tickets just £5 and we promise a very special vibe.  Live, Dance, Art, Social.

Buy a ticket here and support our quest for excellence (and fun) within hip hop.

His show on Kmah goes out April 26 / May 24
