If you ever watched hit TV series Fat Friends by the incredibly talented Leeds writer Kay Mellor (did we mention she’s from Leeds?), then you’ll know Leeds will have another reason to be very proud when the brand new stage musical version arrives at Leeds Grand Theatre.

Firstly, how simply magical that the show is premiering in Leeds, the city where the story first shot to fame! It’s set to be an absolute hit. Not only is it written and directed by Kay Mellor, the score of original music has been composed by Nicholas Lloyd Webber. Recognise the famous musical surname? We thought you might. Nicholas Lloyd Webber said: “The musical world of the show is bright, fresh, catchy and poppy, with tenderness as well as music to move to.” In addition, Kay Mellor added:”The musical is funny and sad with a big story and some meaty and memorable songs; together I think we’ve created something rather unique.” We can’t wait!

Of course, every hit musical needs a star actor or actress to step into the spotlight… bring on Jodie Prenger, who’ll be playing Kelly! She’s a huge fan of Fat Friends, Kay Mellor’s work and her personality, describing Kay as “one hell of a lovely lady.” Having seen Kay Mellor talk at Ilkley Literature Festival, I can verify just what a vibrant and interesting woman she is – she exudes such a wonderful presence and she is exactly as Prenger describes: lovely.

Fat Friends hit TV screens in 2000, following the lives of a group of overweight friends (it starred a host of incredible names such as Alison Steadman, Sheridan Smith, Lisa Riley, James Corden and Ruth Jones… wow!) The stage musical sees the group of dieters reunited at the Headingley branch of Super Slimmers. The television series was set in Leeds, and the stage musical is no different. So if you’re as proud to be from Yorkshire as we are – get yourself tickets and celebrate the writing of one of Leeds’ very best talents.
